HISTORY - OUR CLUB

A GIANT IS BORN

In 1902 the Madrid Football Club was founded. In 1920 the King Alfonso XII awarded the Club with the title of 'Real' (Royal). 4 years later, the field of Chamartín, the first Madrid stadium, was inaugurated. Meanwhile, Santiago Bernabeu, a forward player, had joined the team. Later on, he became the Club's President.

In 1943, Real Madrid won the Cup of Generalisimo as well as other trophies. In 1956 Real Madrid conquered their first European Champions Cup. From that moment on, 12 years of constant trophies would come.

In 1978 Santiago Bernabéu died, President of Real Madrid for 35 years.

1902: Official foundation. The Madrid Football Club was legally founded and Juan Padrós was appointed President.
1905: First official title: Champions of Spain
1920: King Alfonso XII awarded the Club with the title of 'Real' (Royal) and the team began to use the name Real Madrid Club.
1931: First Spanish League Title.
1943: Santiago Bernabeu was appointed as the new President.
1944: The new stadium project began
1947: The Santiago Bernabeu stadium was inagurated.
1952: Saporta joined the Club's board and played an important role.
1953: Di Stefano and Gento signed-up and Madrid became the unbeatable team of the national league.
1956: First European Champions' Cup
1960: Intercontinental Cup
1962: National League and Cup.
1966: Sixth European Champions' Cup, goals by Serena and Amancio. Spanish League title after having lost 2 matches only.
1967: Di Stefano left Madrid after a period full of victories.
1974: The coach Miguel Muñoz quit the team after 25 years. At that time, Real Madrid had won 9 Leagues, 2 Cups, 2 European Cups and 1 Intercontinental Cup.
1978: Santiago Bernabeu died. After Bernabeu's death, Luis de Crespo was appointed President.
1981: European Champions Cup runner-up after losing against FC Liverpool, 1-0. They also lost the Spanish League title in the last match.
1997: The FIFA chose Real Madrid as the best football team in history for both their trophy record and their contribution to the European Cup and Competition creation.
1998: Seventh European Champions' Cup after beating Juventus with a goal by Mijatovic. That same year they obtaineg their Second Intercontinental Cup.
2000: Eighth European Champions' Cup after beating Valencia, 3-0, with goals by Morientes, McMannaman and Raúl. Florentino Pérez was elected as the Real Madrid President and Di Stefano was appointed Honorary President.
2001: Luis Figo won the Golden Ball as the best world's football player. Real Madrid conquered their 28th national League -a title they had lost during the 4 previous seasons- after beating Alavés, 5-0.
2002: The 100th Club's anniversary celebration. Ninth European Champions' Cup. First European Super Cup. Ronaldo signed-up and was awarded the Golden Ball. Third Intercontinental Cup.
2004: The building of the Real Madrid City began. Camacho came back as the new coach. Florentino Pérez was reelected president.

THE 80's


1986 was the year of the fabulous "Quinta del Buitre" (the Buitre Team) with Butrageño, Michel, Sanchís, Gordillo, Martín Vázquez and Hugo Sánchez, under Mendoza's presidency. RM started to win many titles: 5 League Titles and 2 UEFA Cups.

THE BEST TEAM IN THE FOOTBALL HISTORY

In 1997, the FIFA chose Real Madrid as the best football team in history, for both their trophy record and their contribution to the European football expansion and collaboration with the European Cup creation.

1998. Real Madrid obtained both their seventh European Champions' Cup and their second Intercontinental Cup Title. In 2000 the team won their eighth European Champions' Cup Title. Florentino Pérez was appointed President. A year later, the "white" team won their twenty-eighth Spanish League Title.

2000. Real Madrid participate in their first World Cup of Clubs. Eight European Champions Cup Title after beating Valencia in Paris. Florentino Pérez is appointed President after winning over Lorenzo Sanz by a narrow margin in the Club elections.

MADRID TODAY

In 2001 the idea of building the Real Madrid City became a reality. That same year, Zidane joined the team. He is considered one of the best football players in the world and Figo was elected best world player by FIFA.

In 2002 Real Madrid celebrate their 100th anniversary as well as their 9th European Champion's Cup, their 1st European Super Cup, their 3rd Intercontinental Cup and Ronaldo's sign-up.

The Real Madrid City began to be built in 2004, that very same year Florentino Pérez was reelected as the team's President and Camacho came back to Real Madrid as the coach.
